NYC Dachshund Profile #4

Interview by Lyndsey Toast

This little guy is Grapefruit

And this one is Jeffrey

Lyndsey decided to interview a pair of siblings this time, Jeffrey and Grapefruit.

Age: Jeffrey is 6 and Grapefruit is 8
Harness Type: Hugadog, which are custom made sizes
Favorite Toy: Jeffrey likes rawhide bones and Grapefruit likes Kongs
Food: Wellness
Favorite Place to Shop: Spoiled Brats in Washington Heights
On Keeping Warm in Winter: They don't wear booties, but they have a wardrobe made by their grandmother.
Challenges: Since Jeffrey was rescued from a puppy mill, he is scared of things. Also, his teeth had to be removed because they were rotted. (But Lyndsey things his smile is adorable now, with his tongue hanging out.) His owners found him at Eve's Sanctuary in Harlem after locating him on Petfinder.

Grapefruit has been the best since Jeffrey came along, but he's still scared of skateboards.

Take care of each other!

Love, LT

Doxie Blog Discovery

I've discovered this cute doxie blog, Tails from the Dach Side. Check it out. And let me know of other doxie blogs if you find them! Lyndsey likes to read them with her morning coffee.

No Jumping

The most frequent piece of advice that other dachshund owners give me is do not let your dog jump off things. A lot of them have horror stories about how they came home to find their dog paralyzed and assumed it was from the little guy jumping off the couch.

So, last week, I broke down and got Lyndsey her own personal set of stairs. She's used them a few times, but mostly to go up, not down, and her usage usually involves me bribing her with a toy or treat.

LT loves getting up on any and all furniture in the house; the bed, the couches, the rocking chairs, the footstools. She acts like she's spring loaded. I've seen her get real air. I bet she could clear a good three or three and a half feet.

So, I've listened to the advice about not letting her jump, but who out there has advice on how to get her to use her stairs?

Ear Infection Contd.

I did end up bringing her to the Williamsburg Animal Clinic, and I'm glad that I did. She had an infection in both ears, and the vet cleaned out her ears really thoroughly, while showing me how to do it myself, and prescribed her drops for her ears. I'm supposed to give her the drops twice a day for ten days and clean out her ears every three days. Lynds is NOT going to like that at all.

Dachshund Ear Cleaning Instructions

1. Soak a cotton ball with ear cleaning solution (I got mine at the vet's but they sell similar products at pet stores)
2. Squeeze the liquid into the doxie's overturned ear
3. Massage the ear for about 15-20 seconds. You should hear a swishing sound, which means there's enough solution in there. This will loosen up any debris in the ear.
4. Wipe out the inside of the ear with a piece of gauze or paper towel.

Repeat as necessary.

If Lyndsey permits, I will post a video of this in a few days.

Dachshund Ear Infection?

This post is dedicated to those who are hypochondriacs about their dogs. You are not alone, trust me.

Well, it was only a matter of time before Lyndsey had some kind of ailment that freaked me out. And it only took 8 days since beginning this blog.

Lately I've noticed the inside of LT's ear had been unusually red, and a few days ago, it seemed to have gotten worse. She didn't act like she was in pain but she was definitely bothered if you touched it, and it looked swollen, especially compared to her right ear. So I squirted the Petco ear cleaning solution on a paper towel and cleaned out her ear. (I may have gone a tad overboard and used the rest of the bottle.)

And whenever I think there might be something wrong with her, of course I have to Google it. Which usually makes me think she's going to die. Online, a lot of the info stated that doggie ear infections are usually accompanied by a smell. Her ear didn't smell, but she seemed to be scratching at it somewhat. I also read that vinegar was a good cleaning solution for their ears, so I cleaned her ear out with some the next day. But I couldn't help but still be worried about it and I made a vet appointment for Wednesday. Hey, she's gone to the vet's for less. Since we've gotten her, we've brought her to the vet for countless things: diarrhea, coughing etc, with some trips being completely unnecessary.

I'm happy to say that after cleaning out her ear several times with vinegar, she woke up today looking much better. I think I just may be able to cancel that appointment. We'll have to see.

I know that dachshunds have long, floppy ears that we need to clean out often, and I will admit to slacking on that a bit. I just hope this was helpful to someone out there who is worrying about their poor doggie and their weird, red ear. Your dog will be fine. Mine was.
