NYC Dachshund Profile #4

Interview by Lyndsey Toast

This little guy is Grapefruit

And this one is Jeffrey

Lyndsey decided to interview a pair of siblings this time, Jeffrey and Grapefruit.

Age: Jeffrey is 6 and Grapefruit is 8
Harness Type: Hugadog, which are custom made sizes
Favorite Toy: Jeffrey likes rawhide bones and Grapefruit likes Kongs
Food: Wellness
Favorite Place to Shop: Spoiled Brats in Washington Heights
On Keeping Warm in Winter: They don't wear booties, but they have a wardrobe made by their grandmother.
Challenges: Since Jeffrey was rescued from a puppy mill, he is scared of things. Also, his teeth had to be removed because they were rotted. (But Lyndsey things his smile is adorable now, with his tongue hanging out.) His owners found him at Eve's Sanctuary in Harlem after locating him on Petfinder.

Grapefruit has been the best since Jeffrey came along, but he's still scared of skateboards.

Take care of each other!

Love, LT

Doxie Blog Discovery

I've discovered this cute doxie blog, Tails from the Dach Side. Check it out. And let me know of other doxie blogs if you find them! Lyndsey likes to read them with her morning coffee.

No Jumping

The most frequent piece of advice that other dachshund owners give me is do not let your dog jump off things. A lot of them have horror stories about how they came home to find their dog paralyzed and assumed it was from the little guy jumping off the couch.

So, last week, I broke down and got Lyndsey her own personal set of stairs. She's used them a few times, but mostly to go up, not down, and her usage usually involves me bribing her with a toy or treat.

LT loves getting up on any and all furniture in the house; the bed, the couches, the rocking chairs, the footstools. She acts like she's spring loaded. I've seen her get real air. I bet she could clear a good three or three and a half feet.

So, I've listened to the advice about not letting her jump, but who out there has advice on how to get her to use her stairs?

Harness: Cetacea
Favorite Toy: Petco dachshund
Food: Beneful
Conquered Challenges: Used to pee on the bed after a sheet change

Ear Infection Contd.

I did end up bringing her to the Williamsburg Animal Clinic, and I'm glad that I did. She had an infection in both ears, and the vet cleaned out her ears really thoroughly, while showing me how to do it myself, and prescribed her drops for her ears. I'm supposed to give her the drops twice a day for ten days and clean out her ears every three days. Lynds is NOT going to like that at all.

Dachshund Ear Cleaning Instructions

1. Soak a cotton ball with ear cleaning solution (I got mine at the vet's but they sell similar products at pet stores)
2. Squeeze the liquid into the doxie's overturned ear
3. Massage the ear for about 15-20 seconds. You should hear a swishing sound, which means there's enough solution in there. This will loosen up any debris in the ear.
4. Wipe out the inside of the ear with a piece of gauze or paper towel.

Repeat as necessary.

If Lyndsey permits, I will post a video of this in a few days.

Dachshund Ear Infection?

This post is dedicated to those who are hypochondriacs about their dogs. You are not alone, trust me.

Well, it was only a matter of time before Lyndsey had some kind of ailment that freaked me out. And it only took 8 days since beginning this blog.

Lately I've noticed the inside of LT's ear had been unusually red, and a few days ago, it seemed to have gotten worse. She didn't act like she was in pain but she was definitely bothered if you touched it, and it looked swollen, especially compared to her right ear. So I squirted the Petco ear cleaning solution on a paper towel and cleaned out her ear. (I may have gone a tad overboard and used the rest of the bottle.)

And whenever I think there might be something wrong with her, of course I have to Google it. Which usually makes me think she's going to die. Online, a lot of the info stated that doggie ear infections are usually accompanied by a smell. Her ear didn't smell, but she seemed to be scratching at it somewhat. I also read that vinegar was a good cleaning solution for their ears, so I cleaned her ear out with some the next day. But I couldn't help but still be worried about it and I made a vet appointment for Wednesday. Hey, she's gone to the vet's for less. Since we've gotten her, we've brought her to the vet for countless things: diarrhea, coughing etc, with some trips being completely unnecessary.

I'm happy to say that after cleaning out her ear several times with vinegar, she woke up today looking much better. I think I just may be able to cancel that appointment. We'll have to see.

I know that dachshunds have long, floppy ears that we need to clean out often, and I will admit to slacking on that a bit. I just hope this was helpful to someone out there who is worrying about their poor doggie and their weird, red ear. Your dog will be fine. Mine was.

Awesome Doxie Bag

This is Lyndsey, waiting for the L train in her amazing designer dog bag made by none other than her loving adoptive father.

Ladies and gentlemen, the next L train is now arriving on the Brooklyn bound track. Please stand away from the platform edge.

It's made of leather and it's got a soft, velour-like interior and a pillow on the bottom for her to rest her tired paws on. The outside is laser engraved with little dachshund silhouettes and her initials, "LT." She goes everywhere in that bag, from the post office to clothes shopping. It's her little puppy cave, and she loves it. Especially when she can pull her head inside of it to hide when some weirdo tries to reach out and pet her.

And check out my matching purse, which has the same pattern as LT's dog bag engraved out the outside.  Also made by my talented husband.

The lining is covered in sappy, cute pictures of Lynds.

She approves.

Dachtoberfest NYC 2011

The sacred holiday for Dachshund lovers. Dachshund Day is held twice a year in Washington Square Park. Me and my husband had been hearing about it for a few years now, but would always miss it because we could never figure out when and where it was.

Well, this year, we somehow managed to figure out the top secret deets, and were excited to go (maybe too excited). We packed up Lyndsey Toast in her dachshund bag, and rode with her on the train this past Saturday from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

On our way there, we saw a woman and her awesome, almost solid white doxie headed there, and they followed us.

Entering the park, we could see a solid crowd of people surrounding the fountain. I was so excited as we walked with Lyndsey toward all of the wieners. Lyndsey was not thrilled. She did not want to make friends with her kind, as much as I wished she would. She kept on trying to run out of the park and look for squirrels to chase.

The day consisted of an hour and a half of dachshund owners pointing at, taking pictures of, and petting each other's dogs. Awesome. And then two men handed out sheet music, before leading everyone in a song. The best song ever.

There's no other dog like a dachshund
walking so close to the ground
they're stubborn and sly as a fox
the happiest pet to be found

Dachsie meine dachsie
the best canine under the sun
call you "wiener" or "sausage" or "hot dog"
we know that you're number one

Most kinds of dogs seem to either
have shapes or proportions all wrong
they're only one way or the other
but dachshunds are both short and long

Dachsie meine dachsie
the best canine under the sun
call you "wiener" or "sausage" or "hot dog"
we know that you're number one

Hilarious. Don't be surprised if you see this one shooting up the Billboard charts.

Now to the good part. We saw little, big, old, young, longhair, shorthair, wirehair, fat, and skinny. In every color you could ever imagine. Dapple, piebald, black and tan, chocolate, brindle, izzy. And here they are.

One my my favorites. Bless his little doxie soul.

Where'd ya get that dress, girl?

Dachshund Day, put on by the Dachshund Friendship Club, is held every Fall and Spring in Washington Square Park. Better start planning now. The next one is the Spring Fiesta on April 30.

Welcome to the Lyndsey Toast Blog

Welcome to the Lyndsey Toast blog, from the perspective of an NYC dachshund owner. You'll find information, experiences, and entertaining facts, all related to our little wiener friends.

Having a dachshund is kind of like being in a special club. When two dachshund owners see each other on the street, they have to let their dogs meet. A person's credibility goes up a million points if they have a dachshund, because it means that they "get it." Short and long is the way to go.

I'm sorry to break this news, but we may just have the cutest dachshund out there. Check her out, her name is Lyndsey Toast, the inspiration for all of this.

My husband and I don't treat our dog like a child. We treat her better than a child. We are "those people." I know it and I don't care.

We always find ourselves wondering, worrying about whether things she does or the problems she has are "normal." We are always asking other dachshund owners questions, and bringing LT to the vet way too much. Which was why we created this blog.

In the future you'll find profiles about other NYC dachshunds, their likes, dislikes, and habits. You'll also find articles from a personal perspective about products, behavior issues, tips, and tidbits. Hopefully someone, somewhere will find this stuff helpful. Or at least appreciate the abundance of cute pictures and videos.

Here's one now. Lyndsey when she first came home. I know I'm a dork. Enjoy!
